Scientology Volunteer Ministers Provided Disaster Relief Efforts at 23 Sites

Los Angeles, California (PRWEB) February 5, 2009

Scientology Volunteer Ministers, the Church of Scientology International emergency response and independent relief organization, were responsible for overseeing one-on-one help at 23 separate disaster sites in 2008.

In May, Scientology Volunteer Ministers worked in conjunction with the Red Cross to deliver aid after a devastating 7.9 earthquake killed over 60,000 men, women and children in the Sichuan Province of China. Volunteer Ministers also used spiritual healing techniques that helped thousands who had lost homes and families regain control of their lives.

That same month, a medical doctor who is also a trained Scientology Volunteer Minister (VM) traveled with a Thai medical assistance team to cities in Myanmar struck by the devastating cyclone that killed an estimated 130,000. He and another medical doctor, who is also a Scientology Volunteer Minister, trained other MDs to perform Scientology Assists, or techniques that help people overcome the emotional and spiritual side of the trauma. A monk at the disaster site was utterly exhausted and in severe pain. When a Scientology Volunteer Minister gave him an Assist the monk announced, “The pain is gone!” and asked the Scientology Volunteer Ministers to train him and 50 other monks to deliver this procedure.

Scientology Volunteer Ministers worked with emergency firefighters in India to combat two major fires. In Johannesburg, South African Volunteer Ministers worked with police to provide shelter for hundreds of foreigners displaced during an outbreak of racial violence. In the U.S., Volunteer Ministers helped battle California brush fires. In Colombia, they dealt with floods in three different locations.

In late November, a team of Scientology Volunteer Ministers arrived in Mumbai to help in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks. The VMs went to Mumbai’s Sir JJ Government Hospital, where they provided relief efforts to those injured in the attacks. For weeks, they went from bed to bed throughout the wards, helping victims with Scientology Assists. To help as many people as possible, they trained the families of the injured to do the simple procedures on their own. Two other hospitals asked for the Scientology Volunteer Ministers help when they heard how fast victims at that hospital were recovering.

Over thirty years ago the founder of the Scientology religion, L. Ron Hubbard, initiated a program to train Scientology volunteers to become Volunteer Ministers, who would indiscriminately help people in much the same way that the “barefoot doctors” of China used to do by medically assisting to those who could not afford professional help. Today, this program is carried out by thousands of Scientology Volunteer Ministers around the world, who act on a strictly volunteer basis providing unique services to help in any kind of difficulty. Scientology Volunteer Ministers have gained the reputation of being there for the long haul, staying until the situation is fully resolved without regard to their own personal comforts. Scientology Volunteer Ministers work very closely with other disaster emergency response groups and agencies, such as the Red Cross and local fire and police departments.

Disaster relief, however, is not the only work the Scientology Volunteer Ministers do. They help people who are sick, injured and addicted to drugs, as well as those who need to improve communication skills, resolve conflicts, or are suppressed. They help those who have ethical problems, whose marriages are suffering, those who need help in the workplace and more.

These volunteers are carrying out a mission expressed by L. Ron Hubbard, when he founded the Volunteer Ministers’ program: “A Volunteer Minister does not shut his eyes to the pain, evil and injustice of existence. Rather, he is trained to handle these things and help others achieve relief from them and new personal strength as well.”

The Marine Mammal Center Recognizes the Extraordinary Contributions of Former Chairman Merrill Magowan During its 14th Annual Gala

The Marine Mammal Center Recognizes the Extraordinary Contributions of Former Chairman Merrill Magowan During its 14th Annual Gala

Sausalito, Calif. (PRWEB) October 1, 2010

The Marine Mammal Center celebrates its 14th Annual Gala and Live Auction with a salute to former Chairman Merrill L. Magowan on Thursday, October 14, at The Palace Hotel in San Francisco. The Gala event starts at 6 P.M. and will include cocktails, a formal dinner, music, a live auction featuring many one-of-a-kind items to bid on, and a look at Mr. Magowan’s significant accomplishments on behalf of the Center. The Gala is the Center’s single largest fundraising event of the year, and proceeds will support much-needed funds for food and medical treatment, as well as many other supplies used to run the animal care hospital, research and education center. Tickets for the Gala and Live Auction can be purchased online at http://www.MarineMammalCenter.org/AnnualGala.

“My wife Cinnie and I are proud of the long tradition our families have of sharing our resources and contributing toward positive change to improve the communities we live in,” said The Marine Mammal Center’s former Chairman Merrill L. Magowan. “I was drawn to the Center’s work because of my lifelong interest in animal welfare and the strength of the scientific staff advising the Center. It is the work of The Marine Mammal Center that is a welcome reminder that what we do to the oceans, we are ultimately doing to ourselves as a community, and without organizations like the Center we would never know what ails seals and sea lions and how we are all connected to them and their ocean home.”

During his time as Chair, Mr. Magowan dramatically improved the Center’s ability to complete a $ 32 million fundraising campaign to rebuild the Sausalito headquarters. He led the Center in raising 90% of the funds from sources who had never donated to the organization before, and in many cases, had not heard of The Marine Mammal Center until he made the introductions. In all, he raised $ 16 million of the $ 32 million for the capital campaign – something that would have taken the Center much longer to achieve had it not been for his tenacity, his connections, and his passion for the Center’s work. Now that the Center, which re-opened to the public on June 15, 2009, has been transformed into a state-of-the-art hospital and educational visitor center, its visibility and recognition have grown locally and nationally thanks in large part to Mr. Magowan’s leadership.

Mr. Magowan is the Chairman of the Investment Committee at San Francisco Sentry Investment Group as well as an investment portfolio manager. His grandfather, Charles Edward Merrill, was the founder of Merrill Lynch and his brother, Peter, is the former managing general partner of the San Francisco Giants Major League Baseball franchise. Merrill L. Magowan has served on 21 nonprofit boards including the San Francisco Zoo, Safeway Stores, and currently is Chair of the National Tropical Botanical Garden. He joined The Marine Mammal Center’s board of directors in 2003 and became its Chair in 2006.

This year’s Gala occurs during an exciting time for the Center, with a few new initiatives underway, including building additional patient pools at its Sausalito-based hospital as well as a Hawaiian monk seal facility in Kona, Hawaii. There are now only 1,100 individuals left of this endangered species and every effort needs to be made to conserve them before they become extinct. Additionally, the Center has launched a public awareness campaign called Stop Trashing Our Oceans to inspire the public to reduce the amount of ocean trash that negatively impacts marine mammals each year.

Oxford Book Of Health Foods

Oxford Book Of Health Foods

The health food industry is a billion-dollar business in the United States today and is thriving worldwide. However, despite the widespread consumption of these foods, little information on these products is available to validate their actual therapeutic and nutritional value. The Oxford Book of Health Foods is a comprehensive, up-to-date, and scientifically based guide to a variety of foods associated with good health. From fruits, herbs, and grains to vitamins, minerals, and dietary supplements, this new resource offers not only the claims associated with each food, but also the scientific truths behind these claims. Written in elegant and accessible prose by two leading experts in botany and nutrition, the books begins with an account of modern concepts of human nutrition, followed by a series of over one hundred entries on individual health foods and dietary supplements. Each entry for each type of food provides full information on its origins, a thorough description, the claims and myths associated with it, and the scientific evidence to support–or refute–these claims. Beautifully illustrated throughout with botanical drawings, electron micrograph scans, and photographs (all in full color), the text is further supplemented by a glossary explaining the more technical terms and a bibliography listing sources for further reading. A straightforward and authoritative reference, The Oxford Book of Health Foods is a must-have for all who are interested in general health and nutrition.

For National Volunteer Week April 23-29: Flexible Volunteer Opportunities for Busy People

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) April 13, 2006

National Volunteer Week (April 23-29) is for busy people too. Non-profit organization Charity Guide showcases flexible volunteer opportunities, to help busy people make a difference in as few as 15 minutes or during a volunteer vacation.

Hectic lifestyles and unpredictable schedules don’t need to be a barrier during National Volunteer Week, because CharityGuide.org enables even the hardest working people to volunteer — from wherever they are and whenever they want.

Volunteer Jasmine Allgood appreciates the flexibility: “Charity Guide allows me to volunteer at my convenience. I don’t have time to do traditional volunteering anymore since I work and go to school full-time. Fortunately, Charity Guide helps me do something kind when it’s convenient for me, so I can feel good about volunteering again.”

CharityGuide.org leverages the Internet to appeal to prospective volunteers on the cause of their greatest interest and at the moment of their greatest willingness to act. Featured causes include: animal protection, child protection, community and society, environment protection, health and safety, poverty and homelessness, and random acts of kindness.

“There is enormous, untapped kindness available from busy people who yearn for greater fulfillment through helping others, but are unable to commit to traditional volunteering opportunities,” said Michael Organ, founder and executive director of Charity Guide. “Our purpose is to provide ‘would-be volunteers’ with service projects that are entirely flexible and immediately actionable.”

To make it possible to complete a service project in as few as 15 minutes, Charity Guide works with investigative journalists and writers who do the research on potential volunteer opportunities, and then provide detailed “how to” instructions and links.

For instance, in just 15 minutes, volunteers can help reduce identity theft, avoid antifreeze poisoning, or even send an encouraging card to a chronically hospitalized child.

For volunteer Dee Vasquez, helping children is very meaningful: “The 15 minute volunteer activities really appealed to me. I love sending inspirational cards to hospitalized children –- it puts a smile on my face. Who knew I could touch a child’s heart in just 15 minutes?”
